Profile of Onder Hassan
My name is Onder Hassan and I’ve been studying Wing Chun
for just over 2 years now. I first started training in June of 2005
after graduating from University. My main goal at the time was to
keep fit and get back into shape having spent the past 3 straight
years working, procrastinating and having fun which although wasn’t
something I regret doing, desperately needed to break the habit
of.
I remember my first day of training Wing Chun quite vividly as
that was the day that made me realise just how unfit I really was.
Having come to terms with my lowered ego and grazed knuckles, I
came out of that lesson learning an important principle; one which
I couldn’t have possibly have learned at university or even
throughout my school years, and that is if you want to be efficient
and to the point with anything, you need to take the shortest route
possible… A straight line!
I’m sure most of you studying Wing Chun have heard this numerous
times in training and no doubt is something which is often times
taken for granted, but the main reason as to why this is so profound
in nature is because we as human beings are naturally striving toward
a successful but simple life yet react in ways which are not simplistic.
We go against the common sense approach and instead react in ways
which I personally like call “a convoluted mess”.
It was this principle that literally opened my eyes throughout
my training and something which still fascinates me today because
without this knowledge, I could honestly say that I would not have
been able to successfully go forward as efficiently as I could with
my career outside of training.
In addition to this, being an assistant instructor has also made
me realise just how important it is to give; if you give something
of yourself to something or someone, what you usually receive is
something that is far more satisfying than if you were to just receive
it. This is an ethos that can be applied to all walks of life, not
just Wing Chun.
I really do believe that it’s every instructor’s responsibility
to share their knowledge of Wing Chun and experiences with their
students and with those willing to learn using as many of their
resources as possible. And living in an age of computers and the
internet, there really isn’t a better opportunity to do so.
As this being my 3rd year of training, my only goal is to continue
to train to the best of my ability whilst helping others achieve
in their own personal journey.
Keep a look out on my page as I will be posting weekly/monthly
blogs that will contain pictures, videos and thoughts on my Wing
Chun training. I hope you find them as informative and enjoyable
to read as it will be for me creating them ?
All the best
Onder
